FAQs

Common plumbing questions, answered.

Quick answers to the questions Kapiti Coast homeowners ask most. If yours isn’t here, phone Tony on 021 198 3113.

General

What areas do you service?

Pipe Down Plumbing covers the entire Kapiti Coast — Paraparaumu, Paraparaumu Beach, Waikanae, Raumati Beach, Raumati South, Otaki, Otaki Beach, Plimmerton and surrounds.

We also service the wider Wellington region including the Hutt Valley and Porirua. If you are unsure whether we cover your address, phone Tony on 021 198 3113 and we will let you know.

Are you a Master Plumbers member?

Yes. Pipe Down Plumbing is a Master Plumbers New Zealand member. That means we work to the standards set by the industry body and you have access to Master Plumbers Guarantee on most work.

Tony is also PGDB-licensed for plumbing and gasfitting and is a Certified Drainlayer.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency callouts?

Yes. We respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week — burst pipes, gas leaks, no hot water, blocked drains, flooding.

For an emergency phone Tony directly on 021 198 3113. We aim to be on-site quickly anywhere on the Kapiti Coast.

How quickly can you get to me on the Kapiti Coast?

For a non-urgent quote we will usually get back to you the same day or the next morning. For an emergency in Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Raumati or Otaki we aim to be on-site within an hour.

Phone first if it is urgent — 021 198 3113 — so we can dispatch quickly rather than emailing.

Pricing & quotes

Do you give free quotes?

Yes. Quotes are free for all jobs across the Kapiti Coast, and there is no call-out fee for local work.

You can request a quote through the form on this site or phone Tony directly. For larger jobs we will visit on-site so the quote is accurate.

How much does a plumber charge per hour in Kapiti?

Hourly rates for licensed plumbers on the Kapiti Coast typically sit between NZ$95 and NZ$130 plus GST, depending on the type of work and time of day. Emergency and after-hours rates are higher.

For most jobs we prefer to give a fixed quote so you know the price up front rather than paying by the hour. Phone Tony on 021 198 3113 for a free quote.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept bank transfer and cash. An invoice is sent on completion of the job and payment is due within the date shown on the invoice.

For larger projects we can agree progress payments in writing before the work starts.

Plumbing

How do I know if I have a hidden water leak?

Common signs of a hidden leak are an unexpected jump in your water bill, damp patches on walls or ceilings, the sound of running water when nothing is on, mould or mildew where there shouldn't be, and unexplained warm spots on the floor over hot-water lines.

Catching a leak early saves money and prevents structural damage. We use leak detection tools to find the exact source without unnecessary cutting into walls or floors. Phone 021 198 3113 if you suspect a leak.

When should I replace my hot water cylinder?

Most New Zealand hot water cylinders last 10 to 15 years. If yours is approaching that age, leaking from the base, producing rusty water, making knocking or popping noises, or struggling to heat enough water for a normal day, it is time to consider replacement.

Replacing a failing cylinder before it bursts is much cheaper than dealing with the water damage afterwards. We can install electric, gas or heat-pump cylinders. Phone Tony for a free assessment.

Do you install whole-house water filtration systems?

Yes. We install both point-of-use water filters (under-sink, kitchen, bathroom) and whole-house water filtration systems on the Kapiti Coast.

Whole-house systems remove sediment, chlorine and other contaminants from every tap in the house. We can talk you through the right system for your water source — town supply, bore or rainwater.

Do you do bathroom and kitchen renovations?

Yes — full plumbing for new bathrooms, kitchens and laundries on the Kapiti Coast, including new builds, extensions and full renovations.

We coordinate with your builder, tiler and electrician so the plumbing rough-in lands at the right time and the finish-out goes smoothly. Quotes are free.

Gasfitting

Do you install gas hot water systems?

Yes. We install gas continuous-flow (instantaneous) hot water units and gas storage cylinders, on both natural gas and LPG. All gas hot water installations include a Gas Safety Certificate as required under New Zealand regulations.

Gas continuous-flow systems are popular on the Kapiti Coast because they only heat water as you use it — no standing tank to keep hot. We can advise on the right size for your household.

Are gas appliances safe in the home?

Modern gas appliances installed by a licensed gasfitter and certified to the New Zealand standard are safe. Risks come from poor installation, missing flues, lack of ventilation, or appliances that have not been serviced.

In New Zealand any gas work must be done by a PGDB-licensed gasfitter and signed off with a Gas Safety Certificate. Pipe Down Plumbing is fully licensed.

Drainlaying

How do I know if my drain is blocked?

Tell-tale signs are slow-draining sinks or showers, gurgling sounds from drains, bad smells around outdoor gully traps, water rising at the gully when you flush a toilet, and water pooling in the lawn near drain runs.

A partial blockage will only get worse — book a CCTV drain inspection and we will find the exact cause and clear it without unnecessary excavation. Phone 021 198 3113.

Do you do CCTV drain inspections?

Yes. We use a CCTV drain camera to inspect inside drains and find blockages, root intrusions, cracks and collapsed sections — without digging.

CCTV inspections are useful before buying a property, after a recurring blockage, or when the cause of a problem is unclear. We supply you with the footage and a written report.

Do you maintain septic tanks?

Yes — we service and maintain septic systems on properties around the Kapiti Coast that are not connected to mains sewer.

Regular maintenance (every 2 to 4 years for most households) prevents expensive failures and keeps the system meeting council requirements. Phone for a quote tailored to your tank type.
